VINTAGE CHARACTER
The 2016 vintage was characterized by the end of winter and beginning of spring, with abundant rainfall, restoring water reserves in the soil. The end of spring, summer and early fall were highlighted by the absence of rainfall and high temperatures. However, the good water reserves of the soil made it possible for the plant to have enough water to be able to carry out a correct flowering, a good veraison and blushing of branches and, finally, a rapid and smooth maduration. The episodes of heat and absence of rainfall during the summer contributed to the old vines to produce smaller clusters and with greater concentration.
VINEYARD
La Gándara is the historical plot of Herreros de Jamuz. It is a small hill on the banks of the river. At its highest point of 830 meters altitude, there is a plain of about 2 hectares of very old vineyard, surrounded by a holm oak forest. The vineyard, located on reddish sand, is mainly Mencía between 100 and 70 years old.
VINIFICATION
Harvested by hand in boxes of 15 Kg. Manual selection in the vineyard. Contained box to box of the grape without destemming, mixing the varieties Mencía, Alicante Bouschet and Palomino in a conical-shaped tub of French oak, with silphide minimum doses to ferment with native yeast. 60-day maceration and gentle pressing. Aged for 12 months in large-volume French oak barrels.
